Verizon Wireless has confirmed that data service outages affected eastern U.S. customers for up to four hours early today. The company blamed the outage, which affected some users between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. EST today, on defective software in one of its data centers. In an e-mail, a Verizon Wireless spokesman said some users experienced outages, some were hit with service slowdowns and others were not affected at all. "We found the problem in one of our centers, switched out the software and are now doing [a] root cause investigation," the spokesman said.

Looks like Verizon Wireless is the latest mobile carrier to suffer from an outage - this time with their slew of BlackBerry devices, and it is a rather huge issue since this outage is of seemingly nationwide proportions, although there are still folks in various pockets of civilization Stateside that can still retrieve and send their email over BlackBerry. Verizon does not know when the situation will be corrected, so the only thing you can do now is keep your fingers crossed that all will be fixed shortly.

Service has been restored to those Verizon Wireless customers who experienced data outages with their mobile Web and e-mail access early today. Bad switch software reportedly caused outage, according to news reports. The outage impacted customers east of the Mississippi, causing a deterioration of service and lower wireless speeds, the Wall Street Journal reported. The problem was resolved by 8:15 a.m. Eastern Time, the report said. “We had no national outage,” Thomas Pica of Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless told TMCnet.
