Have you ever scene that really cheap-looking TV movie version of the Stephen King book The Langoliers with David Morse? Well, it involves an airplane flying through some sort of inter-dimensional vortex, and when it lands at its destination the passengers find themselves in this eerily uninhabited airport somehow outside of time. They’re eventually mostly eaten by poorly computer animated things that gobble up leftover time or something. Point is: that was a weird airport. Popular Mechanics stuck to the real world for their 18 Strangest Airports in the World, and we find the approach to Toncontin International Airport in Honduras to be especially terrifying.

So the German conference about which I was so apprehensive turned out to be really awesome. In a way that’s almost sad: confronted by increasing evidence about the impossibilities of the job market (I just heard a story about a bright young literary critic who was forced to take a job in Omaha and lives in snow-shoveling misery), I’ve been thinking recently that I wouldn’t mind leaving academia that much, if it came down to it.
